Putin's military buildup is a disgrace. It will take a smart mix of deterrence and diplomacy to bring Putin to his senses. In the long run, democratic values should also be available for Russian people in order to improve their quality of life too. Prosperity and cultural exchange are important. Somehow a post-Putin era must become possible. In the short term, however, clear deterrence is needed.
